About Tom Miller
Tom is a chemist by trade, but grew to love manipulating clay. Many ceramic artists focus on functional pieces like plates, bowls, cups, but Tom loves to stretch the clay and glazes to its minimum and maximum extremes. In doing so, most of his work is artistic and very nonfunctional.
After learning the basic shapes and processes using a kick wheel, he has focused on handbuilding using slabs. At one point, he started deliberately making holes in pieces to make sure that the ceramic item's physicality was the focus rather than how the item was to be used.
He explores texture and structure in unique ways. He understands that not everyone will appreciate his art, but his passion is to push the clay and other elements to a conclusion.
